How to Improve Your Business Visibility in ChatGPT

By George Riley, Founder ·

When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a company, it draws on what it can find and interpret about businesses in that market. If the information about your business is thin, inconsistent or unclear, you are less likely to be part of the answer. This guide covers the practical work that improves your standing.

How ChatGPT builds its picture of a business

ChatGPT forms its understanding of a business from publicly available information: your website, directories, reviews, press coverage and other references across the web. Some of this comes from training data, and some from live web results when browsing is enabled.

Two properties matter most: clarity and consistency. Clarity means a system reading your website can quickly work out what you do, who you serve and where you operate. Consistency means the same core facts — name, services, location, contact details — appear the same way everywhere your business is mentioned.

Make your offer unmistakably clear

AI assistants summarise. If your homepage takes three paragraphs to explain what you sell, a summary of it will be vague — and vague businesses are hard to recommend. State your core service, audience and coverage area in plain language, high on the page.

Go through your key pages and check that each one answers three questions without scrolling: what is this, who is it for, and what should I do next. Service pages should name the service in the heading rather than relying on brand language.

  • Put a one-sentence description of your business near the top of your homepage.
  • Name each service explicitly in page titles and headings.
  • State the locations or regions you serve on the pages where it matters.
  • Answer the questions customers actually ask, in words they would use.

Strengthen references beyond your website

ChatGPT weighs corroboration. A business described the same way across its website, business profiles, directories and independent coverage is easier to trust than one that only describes itself.

Focus on the references that already exist first. Claim and complete your main business profiles, correct out-of-date listings, and make sure your name, address and services match your website exactly. Then look for legitimate opportunities to be referenced: industry directories, local business organisations, supplier pages and genuine press.

Check where you stand, then iterate

Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask — "who does X in [your area]?", "best [service] for [audience]" — and note whether you appear, what it says about you, and what it gets wrong. Repeat for your competitors and compare the difference in how each business is described.

Treat this as a cycle rather than a one-off fix. Improve the weakest signals, wait for platforms to pick up the changes, and re-check. Visibility in AI search moves at the pace of your public information, not overnight.

The takeaway

You cannot control ChatGPT's answers, but you can control the quality of the information it reasons over. Clear pages, consistent facts and credible external references are the levers that matter — and they compound, because the same work improves every other AI platform too.
